The work of a Probation Officer

The principal tasks and responsibilities of Probation Officers involve significant levels of interaction with offenders, victims and others. They cannot be performed without undertaking meticulous record keeping, review, and adherence to standards. The use of information technology is integral to the Probation Officer role.

Here are some of the tasks that Probation Officers undertake:

  • Make assessments to advise Courts and others, especially about the risk posed by individual offenders.
  • Manage and enforce Community Orders made by the Courts.
  • Work with prisoners during and after sentence.
  • Work, directly and with others, to change offenders' behaviour and to reduce the risk of harm.
  • Work, directly and with others, to reduce the impact of offences on their victims.
  • Some Probation Officers work in approved premises, (hostels), where offenders reside.
