The National Probation Service
The National Probation Service (NPS) has brought fresh aims and duties for probation, it has accelerated the development of effective ways of working with offenders and it has created new central and local structures. To find out more about the National Probation Service visit

The National Offender Management Service (NOMS)

The National Offender Management Service (NOMS) was created in 2004 following a Number 10, Treasury and Home Office review of correctional services. The review identified key gaps in the work of prisons and probation. It also identified changes in sentencing that had led to increases in prison and probation workloads.

The Ministry of Justice
As of May 2007 responsibility for Probation, Prisons and the prevention of reoffending moved from direct Home Office control to the Ministry of Justice.
