The training programme

The Diploma in Probation Studies combines a higher education undergraduate degree with a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Community Justice at level 4, and thus provides an academic, theoretical foundation alongside a rigorous assessment of practice.

The training programme involves both academic work and practice experience. The degree is essentially a distance learning programme using specially prepared learning materials for each module. However, each module is introduced by a short academic block usually held in Leicester or Norwich (see map).

The training programme includes:

  • formal teaching
  • use of distance learning materials - module guides, module readers and computer based seminar work
  • individual and small group coaching and supervision
  • supervised practice.

The programme takes two years to complete. It is a rigorous programme that offers high quality training and development and produces effective practitioners.  However, you should be aware that it is also intensive and demanding and will require a high degree of personal commitment.

Practice Development Assessors
Within the work setting each trainee is allocated a Practice Development Assessor who will plan a practice programme to meet individual learning needs. She or he will arrange access to appropriate learning experiences, act as your coach/mentor and monitor your progress and assess your practice throughout your training.
More about Practice Development Assessors

The East of England covers a large geographical area and as such Trainee Probation Officers can expect to travel significant distances to attend some of the academic teaching and other training. Residential accommodation will be provided for those who have to travel long distances. Attendance at all training events is compulsory.
